The brake is an important part of every stunt scooter. It not only allows you to slow down, but also serves for tricks and affects the lifespan of the wheels. Modern brakes are mostly made of steel or a combination of plastic and steel – they are lightweight, flexible, and when used correctly, do not make unpleasant noise. The latest trend is to not use a brake and fender due to the fact that when landing on the wheel, the wheel can push your foot back onto the deck, allowing you to complete the landing on the deck more safely.
On stunt scooters, the brake is not intended for prolonged braking like on a bike. If you stomp on it hard and often, you will quickly destroy the wheels and the brake itself. Therefore:
Use the brake mainly for tricks (e.g. manual).
For regular stopping, it's better to use the sole of your shoe – this will protect the wheels and the brake.
Continuous braking can create flat spots on the wheels, which then need to be discarded, regardless of the price.
Spring Brakes
Used on cheaper scooters.
Returns back thanks to a spring and a screw.
Advantage: low price.
Disadvantage: can be noisy over time, the spring may wear out.
Flex Brakes (steel or stainless steel)
Simple bent metal that bends when pressed and returns on its own.
Advantages: silent, lightweight, easy to install.
Disadvantages: material fatigue can lead to breakage, may be harder to press for lighter riders.
Plastic Brakes with Steel Plate
Combination of plastic and metal.
Advantages: very lightweight, flexible, quiet.
Disadvantages: quicker wear, risk of cracking.
Fender (wheel/shoe protection)
This is not a brake; rather, it prevents braking and protects shoes from abrasion.
It does not function as a traditional brake, more like a cover for the wheel.
Wheelguard (wheel protection under the deck)
A small plate under the wheel that protects the rubber from abrasion.
It does not act as a traditional brake, rather extends the lifespan of the wheels.
On stunt scooters, the brake is not universal and each deck has a different shaped brake and method of attachment. Therefore, it is necessary to choose a brake according to the brand and model of the deck.
Brakes are chosen according to the wheel diameter:
100 mm – only for 100mm wheels.
110 mm – compatible with both 110mm and 100mm wheels.
120–125 mm – suitable only for large wheels. Using them with smaller wheels can lead to brake damage.
Use the brake primarily for tricks and short braking.
Avoid holding the brake for a long time while riding.
If you want to stop, jump off or use the sole of your shoe.
Select a brake according to wheel diameter and ideally the same brand as your deck – this ensures the best compatibility.
