Grip tape is an essential part of every freestyle scooter – it prevents your foot from slipping and gives you maximum control while riding and performing tricks. Its surface is reminiscent of sandpaper and is made in various levels of roughness, colors, and designs. The rule is, the rougher the grip, the more securely it holds your shoe to the deck.
Size and shape – Most grip tapes are universal and can be easily cut to fit the dimensions of your deck. If you have a wider or specially shaped deck, choose a larger grip tape that you can customize.
Pre-cut grip tape – Models cut specifically for a particular type of deck – these already have the exact shape, length, and width cut out, less common.
Design and brand – Grip tape can be classic black, colorful, or with graphics that emphasize your style.
Over time, it wears out and loses its grip. If the grip feels smooth, your foot has a harder time holding on, or it shows visible damage, it's time for a replacement. A new grip tape will give you confidence, better traction, and make executing tricks and controlling the scooter easier.
Grip tape works like a sticker – just follow a few steps:
Remove the old grip tape (a hairdryer can easily loosen the adhesive).
Thoroughly clean the surface of the deck.
Lay the grip tape down, peel off the bottom film, and stick it on.
Sand down the excess edges with a key/file and cut along the edges with a sharp knife.
Smooth out the bubbles – perforated grips make this task easier.
