Kendama is a traditional Japanese toy that in recent years has spread to most of the world. People of all ages can play with a Kendama. A Kendama consists of a body (ken) and a ball (tama), connected by a sturdy nylon string. The body is made up of three wooden cups (zara) placed on a wooden spike (saki). During play you try to catch the ball in one of the cups, on the spike, or to land and balance them together in various ways — there are over 30,000 possible tricks. Kendama is a very fun toy that you can learn to play with quickly and that strengthens motor skills, coordination, reflexes, balance, concentration and more; it stands out above many of today’s board and electronic games — Kendama doesn’t need batteries! Kendama has become a sport and competitive discipline not only in Japan but also now in the Czech Republic.
