Kendama is a traditional Japanese toy that in recent years has spread to most parts of the world. People of all ages can play with a kendama. A kendama consists of a body (ken) and a ball (tama), connected by a sturdy nylon string. The body is made up of three wooden cups (zara) positioned on a wooden spike (saki). During play you try to catch the ball in one of the cups, on the spike, or place it in various configurations — there are over 30,000 possible tricks. Kendama is a very fun toy that you can learn to play quickly and that strengthens motor skills, coordination, reflexes, balance, concentration and more; it stands out above many of today’s board and electronic games — kendama needs no batteries! Kendama has become a sport and competitive discipline not only in Japan but also in the Czech Republic.
